The Touch and Go Sextet was assembled in San Francisco to play/interpret the music of visiting musicians. In 2008 we played with New York City based saxophonist/composer Avram Fefer (who suggested we call it Touch and Go). In 2009 there was a show with composer/multi-instrumentalist Vinny Golia. In 2010 we played with Austria based alto saxophonist, Marco Eneidi (I heartily recommend checking out the large body of work by each of these three luminaries).
Concurrently (2008-2010), I was attending Mills College studying composition with Roscoe Mitchell. Through Roscoe’s teaching and persistent encouragement I gained confidence in my compositional abilities. I began arranging this music with the idea of featuring the individual musical personalities of Ben Goldberg, Aaron Bennett, Sheldon Brown, Lisa Mezzacappa and Darren Johnston. I am truly
grateful for the time, patience and artistry these incredible musicians gave to make this project a success. I would like to express my boundless gratitude to the Novara Jazz Festival. It was a joy and a privilege to be a part of this unforgettable affair. A big thank you to the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation for a generous travel grant, to everyone who donated $ during our online fundraiser, and to the San Francisco friends of Chamber Music for a grant to produce this CD. I hope you enjoy the music.
Thanks for listening,
Vijay
